I was so happy to have an open slot for James’s newborn session when Valerie and James reached out. They are long-term clients of mine and I always love catching up and getting to capture memories for my loyal clients. I shot both of their baby girls when they were babies and now they’re growing up into big sisters! James’s sisters played with their toys and watched Little Mermaid while he finished feeding and began taking photos. Welcome to the world baby James, and thank you to Valerie and James for always trusting me with these special memories. This one was such a peaceful sleepy little baby which, just let me say, is rare, and boy did I get some gorgeous photos. He is such a cutie! I cannot get over his big chubby cheeks! So adorable. His parents are big superhero fans (especially Dr. Strange and Captain America) so I made a Captain America outfit from scratch and worked on some backgrounds. They came out so cute, but we still got some cutesy blue, gray, and brown photos and got to play around with some props.
His sisters love him so much and just wanted to hold him constantly! It was so sweet.
Before booking our parents fill out a questionnaire with what colors, props, and anything else they might be interested in for their newborn shoot. I mean, I am an extensively published, award-winning photographer so how else would I do it? It isn’t easy being the best photographer in LA.
The parents are always super enthusiastic about this part and, as you can tell, chose a variety of blues, greens, grays, and browns for their handsome baby boy. We do whatever we can while considering if the baby is deep enough in sleep, has an upset tummy, or just generally doesn’t like a certain position. If baby James didn’t like a certain pose we try a little to get him back to sleep but if he’s not feeling it, we move on to the next. Luckily for us, he was such a breeze to shoot and had a full milk belly that day. In our setup, we have heaters, heating pads, sound machines, and mommy or a bottle nearby at all times if the baby gets hungry.
I love how these Captain America photos came out! I seewed the mask together and I love having unique photo sessions so that their families can enjoy their special themes for years to come. We have baseball babies, football babies, nature babies, chinese new year babies, and now super hero babies!
If you’ve been reading my blogs or following my social media for a while you’d know my favorite pose of all time: Froggie! Not all newborns can do it but, as you can see from this photo, he did it with no problem. I love the cute little hands supporting the head with the ruffled gray fabric. It’s an advanced pose and requires the baby to not be fussy and in deep sleep and luckily, he was!
I love the difference in textures from the soft blue fabric to the more textured background. It works great for contrast. One of my favorite things is getting to play around with the backgrounds, props, plushies, and poses. I get to have creative freedom and make the parents happy with my vision!
A big shout out to Valerie and James for booking me and booking me early enough after he was born to get some amazing photos. The sooner, the better for newborn shoots so the babies can get milk drunk and sleep through the whole shoot. This means they can also do the more complex poses and aren’t as fussy as, say, a ten-day-old baby. And of course, a big thank you to baby James who was adorable and an absolute pleasure to shoot. I can’t wait to shoot their family portraits for years to come and it’s such an honor to be able to provide these special memories for my family.
