I was so so so happy to hear that Janet was pregnant again. She called me and luckily I had an opening around her due date that I reserved just for her. The day finally came and the couple was tired but ready for photos, like most newborn parents are. I had photographed their first baby not too long before this so mommy and daddy definitely have their hands full! Baby Mason entered the world on 2/2 at 9 pounds 6 ounces.

I loved that they were down for anything including asking Michael to get shirtless and Janet to get into the beautiful gigantic pink dress I have for clients. and Mason… he was such a sweetheart and a dream to photograph. He slept just like a baby should.

In this blog I’ll be going over the process of what we do when you bring your newborn baby in and some behind the scenes commentary.

The first step is setting a date around 5-8 days after mommy’s due date. The sooner we can get baby in after you’re back home and settled the better. As baby ages it gets harder for us to pose them and have them stay asleep and sound the entire time so, again, THE SOONER THE BETTER. I’ve had clients call me months after they’ve given birth for a newborn session and I have to break the news that their baby is no longer a newborn. Usually when this happens we have to wait for the 6 month or 1 year mark so that they can sit up and we can do different kinds of posing while they’re awake.

I also need to know when baby actually comes out! If baby is early or late we need to plan accordingly and I will do my best to get baby in as soon as possible on a day that works for all of us.

Michael and Janet gleamed with joy each time it was their turn to hold baby Mason. I absolutely love how these pictures turned out and am so happy they’re always down to get creative with me.

After baby Mason fed on milk he was knocked OUT! which is perfect for posing and makes for such cute photos. After pictures with the mommy and daddy, we moved onto pictures of just baby Mason.

I love love LOVE capturing newborns’ beautiful little details. I use a macro lens to get up close and personal and Mason was absolutely angelic.

The second step in the whole process is picking out the colors, props, and more for the photoshoot! I send a PDF to my clients and an outline that tells them how many of each fabric type, color, and prop they can pick. I have sooo many bins and bins full of fabrics, flowers, stuffed animals, and more just waiting to be used for your little angel baby. I have an entire wall STUFFED with props so there’s definitely plenty to choose from so that no one feels limited.

The third step is to show up to the date and time we discuss at my studio with your tiny human. Once you get here we have you get settled and have you feed your baby to get them full and sleepy so that we can start with photos. We usually get parents and siblings in the photos with the baby first so that they can relax for the rest of the time in the studio. After that, we move onto focusing on the baby on fabrics and different colors and poses. At the end of the photo session we get baby on props like tiny beds or baskets that can be shown in these photos, and before you know it, we’ll be done. The amount of time each session takes depends on how fussy a baby is but I always make sure my clients allot 4-6 hours for it because they can go that long considering stopping for feedings, trying to get baby to fall back asleep, and all that.

Do you see that little smirk? I sure do! I really love the texture the soft brown fabric adds to the composition as well as the tiny beanie. He just looks so comfy and snuggled up.
